A recent survey by the Japan Patent Office indicates that Japanese companies submitted 41,103 optical pickup patents between 1990 and 2003, equivalent to 74% of the total worldwide number of applications during that period. Companies with the highest number of patent applications were Ricoh, Sony, and Matsushita. In addition, patents submitted by US, Korean, and European companies accounted for 12%, 9%, and 5%.
